Big Road Blues, hosted by radio producer Jeff Harris, airs on Sundays 5 to 7 PM (17:00 – 19:00 New York Time) on WGMC Jazz90.1, public radio in Rochester, New York, and is streamed live on the web.
Since 2007, Jeff Harris has produced a preeminent body of more than 500 radio shows that explore African American roots & blues music spanning from the 1920s through the 1970s. thecountryblues.com is proud to provide you with a path to hear this distinctive program, which holds a great deal of synergy to the mission of this informational resource.
While there are many radio and online blues shows, Big Road Blues is unique in his focus on obscure, out-of-print, and hard to find roots & blues esoterica. There is simply no other show anywhere in the world that focuses as sharply on the deep roots of the blues and African American pre-blues roots music. The Big Road Blues program is distinguished and widely respected for its serious historical focus, in-depth analysis and scholarly approach.
Jeff Harris is originally from the Bronx, New York. He found his way to the blues as a teenager and started out on college radio as a DJ at the State University of New York Brockport where he studied English and Computer Science.
Each week Jeff examines examine different themes. In essence the show is a history of the blues in two-hour installments in no particular chronology. In addition to classic artists, the show focuses an equal amount of time on those forgotten blues figures from the past; from the once popular artists who are now a memory to the obscure artists who may have only cut a handful of 78s, 45s, LPs or were recorded in the field to unissued recordings. This site is updated regularly with playlists, show notes, occasional articles and reviews.
